The brooms are handmade by craftsmen in Wakayama prefecture, who bound shuro (palm) tightly with copper wire. The shuro is a tree in the palm family.
They are used to make ropes and brushes. Shuro brooms have been used in Japan since the Edo period. Shuro brooms are recommended particularly for wooden floors and tatami mats as the fibers contain natural oils that are beneficial to those surfaces.
