Bamboo Crafting Excellence Since 1921

Oomiya Takezai Kougei

Founded in 1921 in the bustling town of Nagamachi, Sendai, Oomiya Takezai Kogei has been a cornerstone of traditional Japanese bamboo craftsmanship for over 90 years. The shop began its journey by handcrafting bamboo baskets and strainers for market vendors and local farmers, serving the needs of a lively community where bamboo products were essential to daily life.

The streets of Nagamachi were once filled with traveling merchants, and bamboo items were in high demand. The founders of Oomiya Takezai Kogei would load their goods onto a rickshaw, visiting nearby farms to provide handmade bamboo baskets and other tools crucial for agricultural work. The third-generation owner, even as a child, would help push the rickshaw, learning the craft and business from his parents.

Over the decades, Oomiya Takezai Kogei has remained committed to preserving Japan’s rich cultural heritage. Today, it stands as the last remaining bamboo craft shop in Nagamachi, a testament to the enduring quality and beauty of its products. Every piece is still made from natural, domestically sourced materials and is handcrafted with the same care and precision as it was nearly a century ago. These unique bamboo products not only serve a practical purpose but also bring a touch of nature’s beauty into your home, embodying the spirit of Japanese craftsmanship.

A Legacy at a Crossroads: The Future of Oomiya Takezai Kogei

As times changed and plastic products became more common, the demand for bamboo crafts dwindled, leaving Oomiya Takezai Kogei as the sole bamboo shop in Nagamachi. After the passing of the previous generation following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, the shop faced an uncertain future. Yet, driven by a deep commitment to preserving Japan’s traditional culture, the third generation now runs both the physical store and the online shop. As they approach their 100th anniversary, they are focused on nurturing the next generation of artisans to ensure that this precious craft continues to thrive.
