A broom chosen once, used for years

Handcrafted by Yamamoto Katsunosuke Shoten — a maker in Wakayama Prefecture working in this tradition since 1862 — the Full Size 125cm is the classic Japanese household broom. Windmill palm fibers, carefully selected and bound with copper wire, fitted to a black bamboo handle. At 125cm it sweeps at a natural standing height, making it ideal for larger rooms and open layouts.

What makes shuro different

  • Handmade in Wakayama since 1862
Crafted by Yamamoto Katsunosuke Shoten using traditional fiber-binding techniques passed down through generations.
  • Natural wax effect
Shuro's natural oils leave floors with a subtle sheen over time — no wax or products required.
  • Minimal dust scatter
Natural palm fibers collect dust rather than dispersing it — no particles lifted back into the air.
  • Gentle on every surface
Soft enough for tatami and hardwood, firm enough to sweep properly. Will not scratch wood, tile, or stone.
  • Quiet operation
No motor, no noise. Can be used at any hour without disturbing anyone in the house.

A broom with a three-stage life

Unlike mass-produced brooms, a shuro broom ages rather than wears out. The fibers soften with use and take on a slight curve shaped by the way you sweep — each pass becoming more natural than the last. Japanese broom makers have a name for this: the three-stage life. New, it sweeps fine indoor floors. As the tips wear down over years of use, it moves to harder surfaces. Worn further still, it sweeps the entryway or outdoors. The broom is never discarded. It is reassigned.

Perfect pairing

This broom pairs with the Harimi Dustpan — made from washi paper lacquered with persimmon tannin. No plastic, no static, and a clean match for the shuro fibers.

For complete home coverage, combine this broom with one of our angle brooms. Use the Full Size 125cm for open floors, and the Short or Medium Handle Angle Broom for corners, stairs, and tight spaces.

How to care

For complete care instructions, please visit our care guide: How to Care for Your Shuro Broom

Shuro palm fiber, copper wire, black bamboo handle

Broom head width 25.0cm; Overall length 125.0cm (9.8” × 49.2”).

Hang the broom when not in use to prevent the tips from bending and getting damaged. Shake the broom gently outdoors after each use to remove dust.

Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can dry the fibers. If the bristles become misshapen, mist the tips lightly with water, reshape gently, and hang to air-dry completely before use.

Crafted to Perfection

From choosing the right materials to tying every bristle, each step is done completely by hand in Japan. No machines, no shortcuts—just the touch of a true craftsman.

Japanese Bamboo

Finding bamboo straight enough for the handle is one of the hardest parts of the process. In nature, almost nothing grows perfectly straight—each piece chosen is rare and carefully prepared.

Lightweight Design

Weighing only around 5lbs, it’s light enough for quick touch-ups yet sturdy enough for deep, thorough cleans without it ever tiring your arms.

Premium Shuro

Made with natural shuro palm, grown only in a specific region of Japan, prized for its soft yet durable fibers that catch even the finest dust. Perfect for those who are sensitive to dust mite allergies.

Unmatched Longevity

With proper care, your Shuro broom can last over 20 years. A sustainable choice that outlives countless cheap, disposable alternatives.

Quiet Cleaning

No plugs, no motors, no noise. Just a peaceful, meditative sweep.

Flexible Bristles

The supple fibers bend easily, reaching smoothly into corners and along edges where vacuums often fail.

Pet Friendly

The natural oil in the fibers hold onto pet hair instead of scattering it, making cleanup quick and stress-free.

Natures Wax

The natural oils in shuro fibers lightly coat your hardwood floors as you sweep, leaving behind a soft, polished finish without chemicals.

No Two Brooms Alike

Each piece is handcrafted from naturally shaped bamboo and palm, making every broom one-of-a-kind.

The Making of a Shuro Broom

Behind every sweep lies weeks of drying, shaping, and hand-stitching. Discover the journey your broom has taken before reaching your home.

Slide image

Month 1

Harvesting the Palm Bark

Shuro bark can only be gathered during a short time each year. Skilled hands take the fibers from grown palm trees and bring them to the workshop. Because it’s done so rarely, every harvest is precious.

Slide image

Month 2-3

Drying, Sorting & Crafting the Core

The bark is dried in the sun for many weeks to make the fibers strong and rich in color. After drying, each strand is checked by hand, and only the best are chosen. The fibers are then softened, trimmed, and tied into a strong base — a slow process that makes the broom last.

Month 4

Layering, Stitching & Final Touches

Extra fibers are added one by one and shaped into the broom’s classic form. The broom is then stitched by hand with copper wire to make it strong. In the end, the maker checks every detail to be sure it’s ready to last for years.
