A broom chosen once, used for years
Handcrafted by Yamamoto Katsunosuke Shoten, a maker in Wakayama Prefecture working in this tradition since 1880. The Full Size 125cm is the classic Japanese household broom: windmill palm fibers, carefully selected and bound with copper wire, fitted to a black bamboo handle. At 125cm it sweeps at a natural standing height, ideal for larger rooms and open layouts.
What makes shuro different
-
Handmade in Wakayama since 1880
Crafted by Yamamoto Katsunosuke Shoten using traditional fiber-binding techniques passed down through generations. -
Natural wax effect
Shuro's natural oils leave floors with a subtle sheen over time. No wax or products required. -
Minimal dust scatter
Natural palm fibers collect dust rather than dispersing it. No particles lifted back into the air. -
Gentle on every surface
Soft enough for tatami and hardwood, firm enough to sweep properly. Will not scratch wood, tile, or stone. -
Quiet operation
No motor, no noise. Use it at any hour without disturbing anyone in the house.
A broom with a three-stage life
Unlike mass-produced brooms, a shuro broom ages rather than wears out. The fibers soften with use and take on a slight curve shaped by the way you sweep, each pass becoming more natural than the last.
Japanese broom makers have a name for this: the three-stage life. New, it sweeps fine indoor floors for years. As the tips wear down with use, it moves to harder surfaces for years more. Worn further still, it sweeps the entryway or outdoors. Twenty years can pass before a shuro broom is finally retired.
The broom is never discarded. It is reassigned. Nothing made well is thrown away.
Perfect pairing
This broom pairs with the Harimi Dustpan, which is made from washi paper lacquered with persimmon tannin. No plastic, no static, and a clean match for the shuro fibers.
For complete home coverage, combine this broom with one of our angle brooms. Use the Full Size 125cm for open floors, and the Short or Medium Handle Angle Broom for corners, stairs, and tight spaces.

Hang the broom when not in use to prevent the tips from bending and getting damaged. Shake the broom gently outdoors after each use to remove dust.
Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can dry the fibers. If the bristles become misshapen, mist the tips lightly with water, reshape gently, and hang to air-dry completely before use.

I wanted a broom that I didn't have to hide in my small apartment. This broom is so well made and a joy to use and even show off. I’m tall so its a little short for me but I still love it
Absolutely beautiful broom! It is beautifully crafted, so lightweight, great at sweeping and areived quickly!
My new broom feels like useful art. It is beautifully made and works extremely well. It has solved my frustration with pet hair and our wood floors shine after I sweep with this broom.
Thank you so much! I love how you described it as “useful art”—that’s exactly the spirit of these brooms. I’m so happy to hear it’s helping with pet hair and making your wood floors shine.
Decided to upgrade from a cheap plastic broom we had been using. The shuro broom is indeed a luxe cleaning utensil. The look and feel of the broom is very distinctive, the ridges on the handle are quite cool. The bristles are quiet but effective. I’m 6’0 tall and the broom handle could be longer for someone my height.
everyone needs this broom. i said what i said!
The shuro broom is a work of art and I'm having trouble using it to sweep for the first time :)
I have it hanging on the wall by our entry so I can enjoy seeing it all day.
I will try it out soon!
I’m obsessed with this beautiful broom! I don’t know whether to sweep with it all day long, display as a work of art, or just fly away on it. Also shipping to my us location was reasonable and didn’t take too long! Love this tool!
Beautiful and functional I got it as a gift for someone who appreciates fine handiwork and beauty. It’s perfect.
Broom or art piece? I love the tradition, craft, utility and beauty of the sharu broom and its much smaller table top cousin. Excellent on our hardwood floors but also good on tile. These are the only brooms we have that don't live in our broom or utility closets.
Beautiful broom! I was looking all over the internet for one of these and got really lucky finding this shop. This broom is really high quality, and you can really see the attention to detail and the fine craftsmanship with how it was made. Functions really well, and I think this will last me many years. Not just a functional piece, but decorative as well. I’m excited to purchase another one of these for a good friend soon! I think she will love it. Thank you so much!!
My broom gives me joy as a beautifully crafted historical household tool and it is so nice on hardwood floors!
