Nankei Chazutsu — Brass Tea Caddy
A brass chazutsu made by Nankei. The form is sized around a 100-gram portion of standard sencha, to sit beside a kyusu at the tea table. The brass is uncoated, so the color deepens over time as your hand and the air work on it.
- Uncoated brass. Develops natural patina with use.
- Dual lid. Inner and outer, both fitted.
- Holds a chasaji. The tea scoop (sold separately) sits between the two lids.
- Holds ~100g of sencha. Sized to pair with a kyusu.
Polished brass looks the same for years; this one doesn't. The uncoated finish is meant to change with use. As you handle it, the oils on your fingers and the air combine to slowly deepen the color. Each caddy develops its own patina.
Inside is a fitted inner lid that sits against the walls of the caddy, and beneath the outer lid is a small space where a Nankei chasaji (tea scoop, sold separately) can rest. The scoop stays with the caddy rather than in a drawer, which is a small detail that makes the preparation easier.
A note on the brass. It's intentionally thin, which is why it's light in the hand, but a hard drop will dent it. That's not a defect. It's part of the material being what it is.
