In Japan, sencha is the most common loose-leaf green tea, known for its fine, delicate leaves. Kyusu designed for sencha are crafted to prevent clogging, allow full leaf expansion, and pour cleanly — qualities that make this teapot exceptionally versatile for many kinds of loose-leaf teas.

This kyusu performs beautifully with sencha, hojicha, genmaicha, bancha, oolong, jasmine, black tea, and other loose-leaf teas. The wide interior space promotes even water circulation, allowing leaves of many styles and sizes to unfurl fully for clean, balanced extraction.

 

Traditional Ceramic Strainer (共茶こし)

Inside the spout sits a dome-shaped strainer made from the same clay as the teapot body. Each tiny hole is carefully opened by hand, creating a fine filter designed for everyday Japanese loose-leaf teas.

Because the strainer is ceramic and part of the body:

  • Fine tea leaves are filtered cleanly without affecting flavor
  • The interior of the teapot can be gently cleaned by hand or with a soft brush

For regular cleaning, rinse with water only. After washing, allow the teapot to dry thoroughly before storing. It is also recommended to occasionally place the inside of the teapot in direct sunlight to help disinfect naturally using ultraviolet light.
