In the late Edo era (1603–1868), Kyobashi thrived as a bamboo market near Tokyo Bay, and it is here that the artistry of Shirokiya Denbei Edo Brooms took shape. Passed down through generations, their time-honored techniques continue to grace homes today.

Crafted with meticulous care, the Edo broom features a handle made from sturdy bamboo and bristles composed of a unique sorghum variety known as broomcorn. Designed specifically for indoor use, this versatile broom effortlessly sweeps various surfaces, including tatami mats, hard floors, and carpets.

The Edo broom’s lightweight design makes it easy to handle and maneuver, providing a more convenient alternative to vacuum cleaners and even Shuro brooms. Its ergonomic build allows for effortless sweeping, reducing the strain on your arms and back during prolonged use.

Behind each Edo broom are only three skilled craftsmen, led by head craftsman Mr. Seiichi Takano. With an unwavering commitment to quality, Mr. Takano carefully selects the finest materials, ensuring that every broom woven at Shirokiya Denbei meets the highest standards.

Over time, as the bristles endure years of use, the tips may become fractured. Fear not—simple maintenance can restore the broom’s effectiveness. Trim the damaged tips with scissors, and the broom will be rejuvenated. As the bristles naturally shorten, the broom seamlessly transitions to outdoor cleaning tasks. With proper care, these brooms can last up to a decade, accompanying you through countless cleaning endeavors.

While Mr. Takano humbly rejects the notion of his brooms being “works of art,” he ardently believes in their purpose as everyday tools to be cherished. Though not fragile, he encourages users to handle them with care—treating them as tools deserving of respect and appreciation.

Now also available in a Premium Long Handle version for upright sweeping and larger spaces.
