Nankei Sencha Kyusu Teapot — White Clay 600ml
This kyusu teapot offers a generous capacity and balanced form designed for smooth, controlled pouring. Its rounded body allows tea leaves to open fully during brewing, helping extract clean flavor and aroma while remaining comfortable for everyday use.
In Japan, sencha is the most common loose-leaf green tea, known for its fine, delicate leaves. Kyusu designed for sencha are crafted to prevent clogging, allow full leaf expansion, and pour cleanly — qualities that make this teapot exceptionally versatile for many kinds of loose-leaf teas.
This kyusu performs beautifully with sencha, hojicha, genmaicha, bancha, oolong, jasmine, black tea, and other loose-leaf teas. The wide interior space promotes even water circulation, allowing leaves of many styles and sizes to unfurl fully for clean, balanced extraction.
Traditional Ceramic Dome Strainer (陶器製共茶こし)
Inside the spout sits a dome-shaped strainer made from the same clay as the teapot body. Each tiny hole is carefully opened by hand, creating a fine filter designed for everyday Japanese loose-leaf teas.
Because the strainer is ceramic and part of the body:
- Fine tea leaves are filtered cleanly without affecting flavor
- The interior of the teapot can be gently cleaned by hand or with a soft brush
- The tea pours smoothly while preserving the full, traditional character of the brew
This style of built-in ceramic strainer is a hallmark of classic Japanese kyusu craftsmanship and is especially valued by tea drinkers who appreciate the pure taste of loose-leaf tea.
Revived Taisho-Era White Clay (白泥)
This kyusu is made from Shiro-doro (白泥), a white clay commonly used in Banko ware from the Taisho to Showa period. Nankei revived this historic clay in 2019 using their own original blend.
The result is a soft greige-beige tone with a calm, warm presence that develops character with use.
Unglazed Interior That Improves Tea Flavor
Although the exterior has a gentle matte finish, the interior is left unglazed. The fine texture of the clay softens tea bitterness and rounds the flavor as it brews.
With use, the clay slowly deepens in tone and character.
Traditional Ceramic Strainer (共茶こし)
This kyusu uses a built-in ceramic strainer formed as part of the body. This traditional method allows smooth pouring while preserving the full effect of the clay interior.
Lid and Body Hand-Matched After Firing
After firing, the lid and body are carefully hand-ground together in a process called suriawase to ensure a precise fit. You may notice subtle marks from this process — a quiet sign of authentic kyusu craftsmanship.
