A Mug That Changes How You Drink Coffee

At first glance, this looks like a mug.

In your hands, it behaves very differently.

Although compact in form, this mug is designed to be filled comfortably below the rim. In use, it holds a volume similar to an espresso or cappuccino cup rather than a large Western mug. Instead of carrying a large drink around, it invites you to sit, sip slowly, and refill.

Coffee, in this mug, is experienced more like sencha than a takeaway drink.

Japanese Tea Proportions, Applied to Coffee

Nankei formed this mug using the same proportions as their traditional tea cups. The smaller size is intentional — encouraging warmth to be held gently in both hands, keeping the drink at its ideal temperature, and turning coffee into a pause rather than a habit.

You don’t drink a lot at once.
You drink well, and often.

Unglazed Clay, Inside and Out

Both the interior and exterior are left unglazed, revealing the natural character of the clay. Over time, the surface develops subtle changes in tone and texture, gaining depth with use.

The clay also softens heat, making the mug comfortable to hold even with hot coffee.

Designed to Pair With the Nankei Pour-Over Set

Its proportions align with Nankei’s dripper and server, forming a brewing setup where coffee is prepared and enjoyed in measured, thoughtful amounts.
