A folding fan in Japanese indigo cotton, stitched by hand in sashiko.
Made by Nishikawa Shoroku, an old Omi merchant house in Shiga that has traded fine goods across Japan since 1585. The fabric is Japan Blue indigo cotton from Okayama, worked with sashiko, the old Japanese running stitch once used to reinforce and mend cloth. The stitching is done by hand, so the shading falls a little differently on each fan, and no two are quite alike.
The ribs are bamboo, split and shaved by hand, cut clean so the fan holds a crisp line when open. Like good indigo, the cloth softens and settles the more you carry it, deepening into something that reads as yours. It folds flat to fit a bag or a jacket pocket, and opens to a steady breeze on a hot train, a still afternoon, or a walk with no wind. It arrives in a paulownia gift box with a matching sleeve, ready to keep or to give.
