In Japan, the third Monday of September is Respect for the Aged Day. It is an annual holiday that honours the elderly. It began in 1966 as a national holiday and was observed on September 15. Thanks to the Happy Monday system, it’s now observed on the third Monday of September. It’s a day to honour the elders’ health and wisdom.

Local communities hold events and give small gifts to elders to celebrate the day.

Many people return home during the long weekend to visit and honour their elders. People spend time with loved ones and go out to dinner. While others send seasonal gifts such as flowers, beer, sake, or Japanese sweets. Or call to let them know they are in thinking of them.

Some people use this opportunity to volunteer in nursing homes or in their communities.
