The Best Dish Sponges and Keeping Them Clean

The Best Dish Sponges and Keeping Them Clean - The Wabi Sabi Shop

How Often Do You Usually Replace Your Dish Sponge?

When I first looked this up, I found Martha Stewart recommending that you replace your sponge every two weeks. She isn’t wrong. Most regular kitchen sponges sold in stores break down quickly, start to smell, and need to be tossed far more often than we’d like. That’s bad for both the environment and your budget.

But if you use the SK Dish Sponge, like I do, the story is completely different. You only need to replace it every two months (and honestly, often even longer).

SK Sponges are incredibly durable. They dry fast, hold their shape, and stay fresh with minimal effort. Even after months of daily use, they continue to foam beautifully and feel almost like new. Because they last so long, you naturally end up reducing the number of disposable sponges going to landfill — a small change that quietly reduces waste in everyday life.

Check Out How They Hold Up

I took a picture of my SK Sponge after two months of heavy, daily use (right) next to a brand-new one (left).

I opened this pack in early September and used the sponge every single day. After two months, it’s still firm, still cleans the same, and hasn’t collapsed or thinned out. This is the difference quality makes — not just in how well it works, but in how long it lasts.

Why This Sponge Is Different

It’s easy to think all sponges are the same — but once you use this one, you feel the difference immediately.

Most sponges:

  • become soft and sloppy within weeks
  • hold water and stay damp (hello odor!)
  • trap food particles inside
  • lose resilience and start disintegrating

The SK Sponge avoids all of these issues.

Its airy, open structure allows water to rinse through quickly instead of getting trapped. It dries fast — which naturally keeps bacteria and odors from developing. And its material holds its shape far longer than typical store-bought sponges.

Small design decisions make a big difference in daily life.

A Sponge That Helps Reduce Waste

This is something I care deeply about. Regular sponges wear out quickly, so we toss them frequently — and because they can’t be recycled, they become garbage immediately.

A long-lasting sponge means fewer thrown-out sponges.

Fewer thrown-out sponges mean less waste going to landfill.

This is not about perfection. It’s about choosing simple, well-made tools that quietly reduce waste without requiring you to change your lifestyle. The SK Sponge just happens to be one of those rare little tools that does that beautifully.

How to Keep Your Sponge Always Clean

  1. Wash after each use.
Rinse well to remove soap and residue. A used sponge left with food or suds can accumulate bacteria quickly.

  2. Drain well after each use.
Let it dry completely. Bacteria thrive when moisture stays trapped in the sponge.

  3. Sanitize when needed.
Most bacteria are killed when exposed to water above 75°C for at least one minute.

I like to sterilize mine by soaking it in 90°C water for about one minute.

You can also clean sponges in the microwave or dishwasher — when I have extra space in the dishwasher, I toss my SK Sponge on the top rack and run the drying cycle.

Signs That It’s Time to Replace Your Sponge

  1. It becomes less foamy
  2. It loses volume and stops draining well
  3. The surface starts to deteriorate

A Sponge You’ll Want to Keep Using

You might think it doesn’t matter what sponge you choose. But try using the SK Sponge once — most people don’t go back.

I really hope you give it a try. If more of us used long-lasting tools, we’d send far fewer sponges to landfill. Every small choice adds up.
